Weekly Highlights
The
first truly waterproof video camera
Been fooled by a "water-resistant" camera that was fried the minute
it actually got wet? Sanyo's new Xacti E1 video/still compact hybrid
camera is fully submersible up to 5 feet, for up to an hour at a
time. It's in the familiar Xacti camcorder shape, but comes in blue,
yellow, or white. The E1, like all the Xactis, is a great hybrid
of camcorder and still cam, because it takes high-quality video
(up to 640x480, and iPod compatible H.264 mp4 format) and excellent
6 megapixel still shots. What's remarkable about the E1 is that the
waterproof housing hasn't made the the camera a hulk. It's still
just over 8 oz. and truly palm-sized. There's a 2.5" LCD, which is also waterproof, as there isn't an
optical viewfinder. You can play back photos and videos while you're still at
the beach. The Xacti E1 will be available in mid-June and vendors will be listed
on the Sanyo Digital site.

The
Best Blackberry Yet
Reluctant to take the smartphone plunge? Consider Research in Motion's
new Blackberry Curve (8300), if
you're not sure you want to go the full PDA phone route yet. The Curve has a
full QWERTY keyboard, unlike the recently released Blackberry Pearl, but retains
the Pearl 's much more streamlined design. It also has a 2 megapixel camera
and a media player, and is much smaller than standard PDA phones. However, it
doesn't have Wi-Fi or 3G, so you'll have to rely on the quad-band GSM and EDGE
for voice and data. The Blackberry Curve will be available from Cingular in
a few weeks. More information on pricing information is coming as well.

Cool
colored Nano speakers
The DOC
portable speaker system for mini MP3 players is bigger than the tiny portable
speaker I've been using, but the larger size should make for bigger sound. It's
compatible with 2nd generation iPod nanos, runs on three AA batteries, and comes
with a carrying case. Available in metallic pink, metallic green, black or white
(but not red to match my red nano). $39, and available from Brookstone.
