New Beats by Dre Products

Beats_Pill_2.jpg

Beats Electronics launched three new products today adding to their ever-growing line of wares designed to bring studio-quality audio to today’s listener.

The vision of Beats Co-Founders, legendary artist and producer Dr. Dre and Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman Jimmy Iovine, is to re-introduce sound to today’s listener, giving them music the way the producer intended it to be heard and bringing back what has been lost through poor quality equipment and digital music encoding. The new portfolio of products carries this vision forward.

Introduced today were:

Beats Pill Portable Wireless Speaker. Amazing sound from an aptly-named small Bluetooth speaker. The first speaker to support tap-to-pair NFC and apt-X technology for easy and instant Bluetooth audio. Designed to optimize sound quality and maximize volume. Available in black, white and red for $199.

The Executive Over-the-Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones. Designed to balance noise cancellation that is so important to many travelers without compromising sound. Features all of the benefits of the Beats by Dre Studio Headphones with the added benefit of blocking out jet engine noises and screaming children. Available in a classic silver color featuring high-end metallic and leather finishes for $299.

urBeats In-Ear Headphones. This newest mid-price edition to the Beats earphone line features tough metal housing for more durability, better sound, and beautiful looks. Available in Black, White and Gunmetal for $99.

The new product line takes clear aim at competing products, such as the Jawbone JAMBOX speaker and the BOSE QuietComfort headset. From what we heard today, Beats’ aim was perfect because they hit the bullseye!

All three products are available now from the Beats Store, authorized Beats resellers and at www.beatsbydre.com.

Additionally, Beats announced today that artist and producer Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame has joined the company, bringing yet another relentless perfectionist to the team.

Because Alarm Clocks Are a Buzz Kill

Lark%201.jpg
"No More Rude Awakenings"

"Wake your potential , not your partner."

Got your attention? Good, that was Lark's plan, the maker of the new sleep device which not only wakes you up with wrist-band vibrations but also monitors your sleep patterns to coach you to better rest.

Even if you take the wristband off in your sleep there's an audio back-up. Bluetooth technology makes it compatible with the iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad.

With the Pro version, you get a dashboard which shows you how to improve your sleep. (For review purposes, we tried the basic model, for $99 at Lark.)

We were anxious to try it since our partner has to wake up early (think 5:00 am) to get to shoots by morning light, making it hard for us to sleep in. Would our husband - a notoriously deep sleeper - wake up with the "sleep P.J's" ( a flexible wristband) ? He did. Did we get to sleep in? We did.

Did it save our marriage? Probably.

Shower with a Friend

iShowerbig.jpg

Remember those tinny shower radios from the "olden days"? At the time, it was the only way to listen to music in the shower, short of bringing your laptop/music deive into a steamy bathroom which is NOT recommended. And inevitalby, you were listening during drive-time so you had to endure tons of commericals.

Well, say hello to the brand-new water- resistant ishower from iDevices which has a 200 ft range. For us, that mean that we can leave the iPad downstairs and blast our music in the upstairs bathroom.

Either hang the speaker over the shower head or use the stand to put it on the counter. When you power it up it Says "HI", then simply bluetooth pair it with your iOS, Android or Windows Phone-compatible device.

It doesn't show tracks, but does have volume, play/pause, forward and back buttons. And yes, it even has a clock to you won't be late for work.

Compared to the shower radios of yesteryear, the sound quality is big and rich. Pump up the bass and get clean. $99 at iShower.

Third Rail : Terrible Name, Handy Gadget

Third_Rail_System_2%5B1%5D.jpg

Despite the off-putting name, the Third Rail battery case for iPhones is a useful gadget, made all the better by the fact that it will work with future iPhone models by simply switching out the case.

Comprised of a protective case (Slim Case) and a universal, removable battery (Smart Battery), the Third Rail "System" is a thin, battery-enabled protective case that allows you to add extra power when you need it.

The light- weight battery can also serve as a stand-alone universal charger for other devices (via micro USB). Handy.

For road-warriors, pick up a few extras and stash them in your briefcase.

Hackers Beware

video_thumbnail.png

FACT: The average working adult today spends less time in a corporate office and more time telecommuting, whether it be from home or the local Starbucks, connected to an open Wi-Fi network.

What most of us don't realize is that when we log onto any Wi-Fi network, we put our information - and ultimately our identity - at risk. Seems like there are hackers lurking around every coffee cup, using software such as Firesheep or Reaver to hack into your account.

So what's a gal to do? We tried the free Virtual Private Networking (VPN) service, "proXPN," which utilizes the OpenVPN protocol to establish a 512-bit encryption tunnel using a 2048-bit key, which keeps all our data rom being intercepted, monitored or recorded.

Available for both Windows and Mac, proXPN also offer paid subscriptions with more advanced features, such as support for mobile devices and access to the VPN servers locations worldwide.

Tech in the Classroom :What Do Teachers REALLY Want?

Tech%20Classroom.bmp

What do teachers want in the classroom? A new survery reveals they want more technology, primarily so they can engage the students more and help them retain what they learn. The biggest hurdle to purchasing all the new tech - no surprise - is budget.

PBS LearningMedia has designed an infographic revealing “WHAT TEACHERS WANT” when it comes to classroom tech (pictured above.) All pretty obvious so far.

But PBS LearningMedia also created a a free, media-on-demand service for parents and teachers, which provides easy, instant access to tens-of-thousands of classroom-ready, digital resources including videos and interactives , ie.for the Interactive Whiteboard, plus audio and photos, and even in-depth lesson plans.

We gave it a spin and especially liked some of the videos with popular authors, such as Jerry Spinelli (creator of the wonderful Maniac Magee character) who explains to his youthful audience that sports and books are not mutually exclusive. He encourages kids to emulate Maniac Magee and read books as much as possible.

There's also a "PBS TeacherLine" which helps educators build a repertoire of teaching strategies and knowledge of "research-based instructional concepts" for the new school year.

The school year just got a lot more interesting.

Canon launches the EOS M camera

Canon-EOSM.jpg

This week Canon has launched its highly anticipated compact, large-sensor camera, the EOS M.

The brand's first mirrorless, interchageable lens camera comes with a whole host of awesome features, including 18MP shooting, touchscreen control, HD video recording, ISO 100 - 12800 and an APS-C CMOS sensor.

The lenses are interchangeable and Canon has included one with the camera to begin with and has brought out a second that you can buy as an add-on later.

At around $800 the EOS M is by no means the cheapest option on the market, but it takes brilliant photos and it's surprisingly light and compact for a mirrorless device.

The clever Audible Colours project looks and sounds incredible

A new project has been featured on Yanko Design this week that combines audio and visual tech to create a pretty and rather clever art installation/music instrument...

The Audible Colours project developed by Hideaki Matsui and Momo Miyazaki connects a canvas to a webcam, so when certain colours are dropped onto it a certain note that corresponds to that colour is played.

Each primary colour has a note and interestingly when you combine two you get different notes and when you apply different sizes of paint you produce different volumes and frequencies.

Check out the video above to see Audible Colours in action, although it may just be an interesting project for now it'll be interesting to see how this kind of tech can be used in the future, particularly for music and gaming.

Will the Airmouse soon replace the regular computer mouse?

air-mouse.jpeg

Even the most advanced mice often feel a bit clunky, so we're not surprised that researchers have been working on a much more intuitive experience designed so that you can move around the screen with ease.

The Airmouse is almost like a glove that generates movements from the user's elbow, not only does this mean it's comfier and easier to use, but there's less chance you'll develop more serious repetitive strain injuries over time too.

Check out the Deanmark Airmouse video on YouTube for an in depth explanation of the gadget, its unique technology and why the creators are so keen to create a more intuitive kind of mouse for our tired hands.

Zip-it-up

For all of us who fight tangled earphone wires, XSories has come up with a simple, yet clever solution. Using the basic zipper concept, you just zip up to store, and unzip to use.

Easy? Yes. Genius? We think so.
