Could Second Life change your real life . . . for the better?

Those old clichés about sitting around playing video games being bad for your health may be overturned by new research into Second Life, the online virtual world with over 10 million addicts - I mean, users - worldwide. According to research from Stanford University, having an avatar who is thinner/more attractive than your real self is good for self-esteem because you think you look that good in real life, too. Even more interesting, if you exercise in Second Life, the study found that could motivate you to do the same in your real, first life.
Or you might just choose to chow down and do all your socialising via your PC from now on . . . (which wouldn't be that much of a stretch for me, I must admit).

FC Mobile handheld for original NES gaming fun

Oh, man, my husband will never let me live this one down. Nearly an entire drawer in our spare-room dresser, you see, has been home to an original Nintendo console and a stack of 8-bit game cartridges he picked up several years ago for no apparent reason other than the fact that he saw it at a store. He's always been adamant about keeping the retro set, Duck Hunt gun and all, and now I finally know why.
He's been waiting for this crazy-looking FC Mobile portable game system to hit the market. Designed for those enormous NES cartridges that often required a little "blowing into" to work properly when I was a kid, the handheld is equipped with a 2.4-inch color display, runs on three AA batteries, and can even hook up to a TV for big-screen playback (you know, to make the most of those awesome graphics).
Since I shouldn't lie and say that something like this wouldn't complement the Sega Mega Drive handheld he has rather nicely, I may as well head over to eBay and pick one up for about $50 right now.

Sims sells 100 million units -- and owes me money

The Sims Is A Global Cultural Phenomenon In 60 Countries And 22 Languages Thanks To Players of The Sims Everywhere
That's the headline of The Sims' (a label of Electronic Arts) press release today, celebrating 100 million units sold around the world.
As my little girl, Mackenzie, is addicted to Sims and owns EVERY game, starting with the first one sold in 2000, I figure EA could spread the joy and send us a royalty check.
Sixty percent of gamers are girls, and EA was one of the first companies to clue into this. By allowing users to create their own characters and worlds, it's created a wonderful virtual world for my baby. She loves designing new houses and cities for her lucky Sims family. Her latest game? Sims2 Pets.
While I don't think a check is forthcoming, as a special thank you to players of The Sims, you can visit The Sims 2 on April 16th to download a "complimentary exclusive outfit for your Sims in honor of this milestone."
Party down, Sims!

What does mobile gaming have to do with saving mountain gorillas?

It turns out that this mobile game, Silverbackers, has everything to do with gorilla conservation. Go to the site to download the game and learn about these awesome creatures living in the forests of Central Africa - their population totals just over 700. Here's the interesting part: these gorillas are endangered because they live in a habitat rich in Coltan, a mineral used for the production of cell phones. What better way to bring attention to this problem than through our cell phones?

Handheld Tetris game with color

I used to have a friend who refused to listen to my rationale about why something like a PSP or Nintendo DS Lite was more cost-effective (not to mention better looking and more versatile) than her basket of those dedicated handheld games she'd get from supermarkets and drug stores.
Unable to break through her steel wall of stubbornness, I eventually gave in and started buying her games to add to her collection. When I gave her some "big screen" version of Tetris a few years ago, she nearly keeled over from excitement. Never mind that the graphics looked like something from the original Game Boy (aka "the spinach-green era"); she couldn't get over how "big" the screen was.
We ended up having a falling out a few years later (unrelated to gaming) that we've yet to get over, but I'm still thinking about sending her this new Tetris Gold Game ($35) because of its 2.5-inch color screen. It would floor her.
Tetris on a color screen. Imagine that!

Adjustable tv stand for Wii fanatics

I've never heard anyone complain that their Wii skills are hampered by their inability to adjust their tv screen to eye level when they're standing, but then again, I don't know any true Wii fanatics (only normal Wii players who only occasionally get caught in 15-hour Guitar Hero marathons). For the obsessed, this stand adjusts to sitting and standing positions with a remote control.
Available at Thanko's Rare Mono Shop (in Japanese) for about $675.

Logitech GT Driving Force Racing Wheel

A friend of mine was very excited about the announcement today at the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco that Logitech unveiled the official wheel of Gran Turismo, the Logitech Driving Force GT racing wheel. She's a huge NASCAR fan and plays every driving game made, and you have to have a wheel or there's "just no point!" I've played with her and it's amazing how it simulates a real racing experience, though my racing is limited to go-karts and speeding on the freeway when I can.
With features such as powerful force feedback and an innovative 24-position realtime adjustment dial for on-the-fly control of brake bias, traction and damper settings, this wheel will really spoil her. (Sorry, it is only available for PSP3 right now.)
"Driving Gal" salivated over the new wheel which " simulates understeer, oversteer, and traction loss with frightening accuracy." While the full-size gas and brake pedals deliver precise throttle and brake response, racers can use either the sequential stick shift or the wheel-mounted paddles to race through gears. The wheel also features a large 27.9 cm (11-inch) wheel with rubber-overmould rim, which she says will provide "real control."

Cobalt/Black DS Lite now available

Portable Nintendo DS Lite has just added a new color to it’s DS Lite palette - Cobalt/Black. This two-toned color joins traditional Polar White and more recently added Coral Pink, Onyx, Crimson/Black, and limited-edition Gold and Metallic Rose.
While not too much is different aside from the fashion-forward skin, at 2/3 the size of the original, DS Lite continues to be perfect for packing. Its two bright screens with touch-screen technology are easily adjusted to four levels to adapt to different lighting conditions and to extend battery power. Both 3-inch screens can reproduce a true 3D view with gorgeous renderings.
Free Nintendo Wi-Fi connection (not monitored or censored by Nintendo), allows users to communicate and compete against other DS players from around the globe.
Lithium ion battery delivers 15 to 19 hours of play on a four-hour charge, depending on use; power-saving sleep mode; AC adapter.
Price: $169 at Amazon.
