CNN rounds up cool futuristic tech designs

CNN has put up a sneak peek at the fascinating technology being developed by creative geniuses around the world - technology having the potential to offer products that will soon become the coolest must-haves. All of the featured designs are either working prototypes or are expected to become actual products in the next five years.
The well-rounded list includes gadgets that not only suggest great utility and impeccable design, but possess great looks as well. Some of the gadgets that have made it into the list: the Voicestick - a portable text-scanning device that can convert any text on paper into voice information, the iBangle - a portable MP3 player that doubles up as a bracelet, the Lego-James - a GPS bracelet that allows parents to keep track of their children even as it entertains, the Origami phone and DVD - technology that uses the art of origami for the display screens of phones and DVDs. Superb stuff, this.
Lap it all up at CNN Technology.

Park Your Phone - Mobile Dash Mount

Not just for your iPhone, the Kensington Dash Mount fits pretty much every iPod model ever made and keeps your gadget within handy reach. Just secure it on your dash and the adjustable side clamps will happily hold your iPhone or iPod even if they're in cases. So far, it's the first accessory I've found that does this and since I'm always on the run (translate: late), being able to just snap it out of the mount and dash is a big plus. It also features a rotating head which allows angle adjustments and horizontal or vertical movement. Handy.
$29.99 at Kensington.

Samsung Cleo cell phone sashays into Canada

The ultra-stylish Samsung Cleo, launched in the Canadian market, is unlike any other flip phone in its shape - it is a solid square with a lovely floral pattern inscribed on the outside, and as Samsung describes it, is quite like powder compact (of the make-up kind). When flipped open, it measures a total length of just 5.5 inches in spite of containing a full-blown QWERTY keypad and a spacious color LCD screen that can display your SMS messages as threads of text conversation. Plus Samsung throws in a 1.3MP camera, an MP3 player with up to 8GB expandable memory, and Bluetooth (stereo). It will be available exclusively in partnership with Bell Mobility and Solo Mobile in three delicious options - pink, champagne and a special "Kisses from Cleo" edition - a "shimmering pink phone with a Cake Beauty mulberry sorbet lip butter."
The handset is apparently priced at $300 and currently available only with Solo Mobile starting at $100 for a 3-year contract. Cool(eo) Canada.

Digital Post-It comes to life with the MintPad

If you are a digger for gizmos with small form factors, this first brainchild from the Korean company MintPass will most likely leave you lusting shamelessly for one - the WiFi-enabled multimedia device called the MintPad.
The MintPad is probably the coolest mini-gadget that we’ve seen in quite a while. Though it looks absolutely cute, the device has sophisticated functions. Cut it up and you find that it is somewhat like a mini-tablet PC - a 3-inch TFT screen, 1.3MP camera, and 4GB memory for playing music, videos and storing photos (with support for upto 8GB microSD). The interesting thing however is, you can create notes similar to Post-It notes and send it out to your friends via Wi-Fi. And if you can manage to - have fun blogging, browsing, or chatting with your friends.
Pretty awesome considering that the MintPad is priced at just $157. Bad news - it is available only in Korea.

Mix Tape USB Drive

I think the first time you think "kids today just don't understand...", you officially become an old person. I crossed that line last week when I came across an old cassette tape in my car and found, to my excitement, that the very faded label read "Always Blue". It was one of my last mixed tapes ever- something from the 90s, complete with melodramatic title, and catchy, anthemic songs of woe, suicide, and repression (and not all by the Smiths). I vividly remembered the experience of making the tape, with my double-cassette boombox with built-in CD, with stacks of CDs and tapes piled up, ceiling-high, and I suddenly missed those days- when it was worth the effort to spend almost the entire day to get a mix just right- sometimes re-recording a song five or six times until the last bit of fading music didn't get accidentally cut off. You have to have lived to understand. These days I am too lazy to make playlists most of the time, and hit "random" if I want to be surprised.

Cooler Light - Simple Invention

The best inventions are sometimes the simplest. Take this "Cooler Light" from Coghlan's, which works just like your refrigerator light.
A single LED light reflected through an acrylic lens, secured to the underside of the cooler lid with double side adhesive tape, shines automatically when the lid is raised. But unlike the typical refrigerator, the Cooler Light will shut off automatically after 20 seconds regardless if the lid is shut completely.
No more fumbling around in the dark for a beer at a tailgating party. Never happen to you? Me neither but I sure could see using it camping.
$8.99 at Coghlan's. While you're there, check out the "Cooler Dy' which is a simple plastic clip to keep your cooler partially open after cleaning, preventing mold and odor. $3.29 and indispensable.

The Creative Sound Blaster - X-Fi Go!

So, the Queen Bee of Creative Labs, Susie Haynes, e-mails me:
We have a cool new product that I want to get in your hands called the Sound Blaster X-Fi Go! This is a 1GB USB memory stick that features our X-Fi audio technology. All you have to do is plug Sound Blaster X-Fi Go! into an open USB port on a notebook or PC and it will enhance all of your music, movie and game audio with no driver installation necessary.
There, I couldn't have said it better myself. Having tested it, I can verifty that's all true and when you've got your stereo headphones plugged in it's almost like having multichannel surround sound. For gamers, the EAX effects produce realistic 3D environmental sounds that make your games scary realistic. (Note: Only for PCs at this point.)
By restoring detail to compressed music (like iTunes or Internet radio) with the X-Fi technology, your audio sounds fuller and more vibrant. $49.99 at Creative Labs. Tell 'em Susie sent you.

Fashion Line of VIZIO HD and HDTVs

VIZIO, which makes some of the best priced quality products on the market, just introduced a Java FHD (FULL HD) line, which will give the company's smaller HDTVs a more upscale copper-and-black “chocolate” look as well as full 1080p at sizes as small as 32 and 37 inches. Both sizes produce a 6,500:1 dynamic contrast ratio as well as three HDMI connections, dual component and RCA video inputs and one VGA input. But the really good news is that the 37-inch Java FHD ships in Oct for $850, while the smaller will go for $650. For more information, check out their site.

Solar charged MP3 player with a difference

We've seen a lot of different solar chargers for gadgets (including the mother of them all, the solar charging table). Now we're starting to see gadgets that have a solar panel built in.
Crave reports that later this year, Singapore-based company Shiro will release a 16GB MP3 player featuring a 1.8-inch color display, FM tuner, and solar panel which recharges the device fully within four hours, sun permitting (which it often is in Singapore - it has to be the hottest place I've ever been to!).
It's called the SQ and there are no price details yet.

Leapfrog’s Crammer enlightens and entertains

Why bother poring over dozens of books when the rest of the world is gaining an unfair advantage by going digital? That is the very concept of this cramming aid from Leapfrog – the Crammer.
Compatible with both Windows and Mac systems, the Crammer is a digital cramming aid which provides answers to more than 16,000 popular questions on mathematics, science and social studies – all compiled from leading school textbooks. The device can be programmed via its USB port through the Leapfrog Connect software that runs on your PC. Keeping in mind that all work and no play can make you a dull-head, there is also the option to play music on the Crammer – it has 8GB of built-in memory to load your music, and a headphone jack. Plus a couple of games and a Spanish translator.
Priced at $60, the device is great value for the money. It's primarily aimed at kids between 8-14 years old, but can also be a great aid for grown-ups who need to brush up on their basics too. After all, who wouldn’t want to be smarter than the 5th grader next door?
