A new kind of Platform

shoe4web6Th.jpg

Platform is a provacative new media artwork under the larger Aphrodite project. Norene Leddy, another Eyebeam artist in resident, created this work to address the issues of workers' rights and safety for the urban sex worker. Consisting of a pair of shoes, Platform contains both an audible alarm system as well as a GPS receiver for relaying location information. As the shoes explore the realities of a trade many people would rather not think about, it also directly applies technology to address the needs of a working community. Even in areas where prostitution is legal, sex workers face dangerous working conditions. From May 2 - May 13, Platform will be on display at Eyebeam. On Saturday May 13th, Amanda McDonald Crowley will moderate a panel entitled "Sovereign Whores and Seditious Technology," featuring Krzysztof Wodiczko, Tracy Quan, Natalie Jeremijenko and Melissa Gira.
