San Diego: Luxe Travel

With CES coming up, it's time to take a break and charge-up for 4 days on our feet, very little food, and tons of alcohol. It's a tough job but....
We're headed two hours south from LA - to San Diego . The city has a rep as a family vaca spot (hello, theme parks like Sea World) but we discovered a way to make it a luxury weekend va-ca.
We're staying at the new boutique Andaz hotel, located downtown in the historic Gaslamp Quarter, where they greet you with a complimentary drink during check-in.
With only 159 guest rooms (including 13 suites) it's understated luxury with fabulous service. You can spend the entire two days there, at the Ivy wine bar with 88 wines by the glass or enjoying the view from the Ivy Rooftop and Lounge, which features the requisite cabanas and fabulous cocktails. There's even a multi-leveled nightclub with DJ's, dancing and Quarter kitchen, their signature restaurant, will soon be converted to a Katsuya, which is just another excuse to go back.
Should you want to venture out from your hotel-home, we're in love with the GOGA boutique, owned by Project Runway contestant Gordana which features her unique designs and sourced-jewelry, most from local artisans. 401 Market Street ; (619) 564-7660.
For a truly French meal, we treated ourselves to Bertrand's at Mister A's , which Gayot voted as one of the Top 10 Penthouse Restaurants in the United States. 2550 Fifth Avenue, 12th Floor; (619)239-1377. It was the best food we've had since, well, Paris.

And there wasn't a whale in sight the entire trip.
