Is Facebook launching a photo sharing app?

There have been many rumours circulating around the major tech blogs and websites today about the possibility that the social networking giant Facebook could be planning to branch out into the photo-sharing app arena.

The initial rumour was reported on Tech Crunch earlier today and has been causing a huge stir online ever since.

According to Tech Crunch, the site has managed to get hold of a whole load of data, specs and even photos of the app itself, which will be built on Facebook's current social graph. At the time of publication the team didn't know whether it would be an independent, stand-alone application or integrated into Facebook's current app, but either way it's going to be a pretty big deal considering a massive six billion photos are already uploaded to Facebook every month!

Considering what a huge success photo sharing apps such as PicPlz, Instagram and Path have been in recent months, it does make sense that Facebook would want a piece of the action. Only time will tell whether the plans are actually going to be implemented or whether this was just a crazy idea that was never meant to go beyond Facebook HQ...
