Scientists create creepy but helpful climbing robot
This strange little tree climbing robot that looks like an inchworm, caterpillar and stick insect all in one is actually called a Treebot and was created by Tin Lun Lam and a robotics team from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Treebot was built to help those who might have to put themselves in danger by climbing trees regularly. Instead of scaling the trunks themselves, people can use the Treebot to complete the task.
As the view of the people on the ground may be obstructed by branches and leaves, the robot can find its way itself with the help of lots of little sensors, which is a very clever addition but means it may take a while to get to its destination.
It's good to see this kind of robotic innovation being used to actually help people who depend on climbing trees for various reasons. It obviously needs a little bit more attention before it can be used, but its a device I'm sure many living in forest areas will welcome with open arms.
