Google funds project to teach computers regret

fail-whale.jpg

Over the years we've seen robots and computers being taught to do many weird and wonderful things, particularly actions that mimic human behaviour.

Just look at the robot that gains sympathy from passers by in order to get charitable donations, or the one which canunderstand your frustrations.

Now Google is funding a new project that aims to teach computers how to regret bad decisions so they don't make them again.

A team at Tel Aviv University are devising an algorithm which will teach computers how to learn from their experiences. The algorithm will unfortunately not make your computer apologise to you every time something goes wrong, but it will learn from mistakes which in the long run will make it run more smoothly and efficiently.

Now, where's the robot that makes us feel better when we're down and does all of our work for us?
