Facebook introduces Groupon-style Deals
This week Facebook will be introducing a new feature to the social network called Deals, which will be rolled out to five US cities in the next few days.
Now if this news is a little confusing, that's because Facebook already launched a Deals service alongside Facebook Places last year. However, the newer Deals will be less focused on checking-in to get discounts and instead deliver offers directly to the users that have opted-in, either via email or news feeds. So, it's no surprise that many have already drawn comparisons between the new feature and the way popular discount platform Groupon operates.
It's actually a very simple process, if a user sees a deal they want, they must "Like" the deal's landing page, share it and then buy it either using a credit card or Facebook Credits.
This is a huge step for Facebook and could certainly mean it'll be competing with the likes of Groupon and even Wahanda. However, Foursquare and Gowalla have managed to stay afloat after the launch of Facebook Places, so only time will tell...
After all, from a shopping point of view more deals, discounts and cheap things can only be a good thing.
