Mydeco: decorate your home without moving your butt

mydeco2.jpg

Most British readers will be familiar with entreprenuer Martha Lane Fox, or with her most famous invention at least: super successful holiday site LastMinute.com. Along with Lastminute business partner Brent Hoberman, Oxford-educated Lane Fox has launched a new interior design site called MyDeco (tagline: "Wipe your feet and come on in") -- and it looks like being just as big.

The site is beautifully designed (I literally said "Ohhh!" when I saw it) and like many homeware sites, showcases an exciting array of furniture from the unique to the practical. But the site offers something different, too: the chance to make changes to your home from the comfort of your chair.

MyDeco's revolutionary tool is called Plan My Room. This allows you to 'virtually' decorate any room in your house by uploading a photo, or you can create an imaginary room and decorate that. (I'm sure that option's used by people in the process of building a home, and not just people who dream of moving but can't find the cash... *cough*).

You can even "buy the look" of your favorite celebrity, as MyDeco has thoughtfully imagined the houses of 87 celebs including Naomi Campbell and Cameron Diaz. It's all very tasteful and chic: the Elvis look is not an option. (I'm a fan of kitsch, but someone had to save me from myself).

Design websites are big business now, as the success of blogs like Apartment Therapy proves.

Something tells me MyDeco will go from strength to strength: the site's in Beta at the moment, so it can only get better.
