101 gadgets that changed the world

Did you know that Velcro was invented by Swiss inventor George de Mestral after he became disgusted with removing cocklebur seeds from his jacket and decided to investigate the reason for its stickiness? Or that the first digital camera was invented way back in 1965 by Kodak engineer Steve Sasson and it resembled a toaster? I didn’t – before I read through this list of 101 gadgets that have changed our lives over the ages. And the list is exhaustive – it covers inventions and discoveries as early as “fire” (59,000 BC) and as recent as the iPod (2001). Call the oldies "retro gadgets” if you will, and have fun browsing this interesting list.

Cheap, reusable Flip & Tumble bags

You never know when you're going to need a bag for schlepping things around - library books, farmer's market goods, extra shoes. I probably have a dozen folding bags lying around the house and in the trunk of my car, but I find that I never re-fold them after the first time I unfold them (well, often I don't know how, it's like solving a puzzle and I just don't have time).
The Flip & Tumble bag is a very inexpensive, lightweight, reusable bag that doesn't look so bad (the teal and lime colors look sort of nice for something that serves as an alternative grocery bag), and is (at least seems to be) easy to roll back up into a ball when not in use. Supposedly, if you can roll up a pair of socks, you should be able to roll up this bag.
Good for travel, I think - throw a couple of balls in your suitcase in case you do more shopping than you anticipated. They start shipping on November 20th, for $15 each, but you can pre-order now.

Wheel work home, but be classy

Do you find that you take your work home more than you wish? And, I'm not just talking about your laptop, it's the piles of papers, notes, and books that your boss wants you to catch up on reading. A nice (but kind of pricey) solution for that dilemma is the Audrey Wheeled Computer Tote by Lodis.
Designed in rich leather, this laptop tote features contrast stitching with a hidden retractable handle and wheeled bottom. It zips with a top zip closure, and has an abundance of pockets to carry just about everything you'll need. Measures 17x14x7.
It's smart, professional, wonderful for treking up and down stairs in the subway, and it doesn't look at all like the ones your neices, nephews, children, or grandparents pull along. No, it's more like a Birken Bag on wheels.
Price: $450 at Nordstrom.com or Amazon.

Chocolap chocolate notebook computer

While certain parts of the world have been at the edge of their seats waiting for the $100 laptop, Germany has been sitting pretty for who knows how long on the $26 Chocolap.
Sure, the unit doesn't actually, you know, turn on or work (it's fashioned out of cardboard, after all), but the keyboard is made entirely of chocolate. That's right, 10.6 ounces of delicious heavenly chocolate.
And who needs a CPU or access to the Internet when they've literally got chocolate at their fingertips?
