Fresh juice with Tropics

Tropicsceramicsset1.jpg

It looks like a melon-esque teapot, but acts like a juicer. Designed by Cuban Luis Ramirez, the Tropics ceramics set consists of a pitcher with a lid that can be flipped over to double up as a squeezer.

The squeezer is the perfect size for squeezing oranges, lemons or grapefruits, and designed so that the juice trickles neatly down into the pitcher. No mess, no fuss --- even the fruit bits remaining on the squeezer can be quickly hidden by flipping it over to become the pitcher lid.

One of the ten highly commended entries in designboom’s Ceramics for Breakfast competition, Tropics is made of varnished ceramics which don’t react with the acidity of the juices. The pitcher is about the size of a large mug, so you can drink directly from it.

Tropics is not available for sale yet (an initial batch was forestalled by the US embargo against Cuban goods), but it will be on show as part of designboom’s exhibition of contemporary ceramics at the London Design Festival, September 19-23.
