Smoke 'em if you got 'em

Sometimes you write the news, and sometimes the news writes you. Two great smoking related posts came up today, and let's just roll 'em in together. The first is the SoloPipe - a sleek collapsible pipe with an internal container for holding your fine smokables. What defines this as a creative designer solution is the built-in butane lighter (YouTube). No longer will les fumeurs du monde be forced to carry both lighter and one-hitter; these paragons of modern design have forever solved the age old mystery of "Dude, my lighter was like right here a minute ago." UnCrate reports the price as $80, and a common complaint seems to be the time involved with cleaning. (Via GadgetReview)

Secondly, the United Kingdom has recently banned smoking in enclosed public spaces, and the creative team at Tank has repurposed the ultra convenient cigarette pack design into a handy format for novellas called TankBooks. Small commuter novels can easily fit into the iconic cigarette pack, and this is a brilliant way to repurpose all of those old cigarette vending machines. Beyond the short novel this form factor would be a great design for traveler's map packs and guidebooks at airports. Launch titles include stories by Kipling, Kafka, Conrad, Hemingway, Stevenson, and Tolstoy. I would love to see all those clangy metal cigarette machines stay in service, and these cute little books should be available in the upcoming months. (Via your friends at mine at Springwise)

I find it reprehensible that you are glorifying smoking. You've come a long way, baby!

I'm shocked. I would be more concerned with what fuels the desire to begin smoking (and drug use) than with the actual implements of such.
Good design is elegant wherever it may be found, and this is an novel solution to an old problem.
