Smartfortwo car: a smart reservation for $99

smartfortwo.jpg

Half the price of a Mini-Cooper, half the size of a compact, turns out to be not-half-bad, especially if you live in urban cities. With the rising costs of traditional fuels, the go green movement underway, timing for the smartfortwo car couldn't be better.

A DaimlerChrysler vehicle, smartfortwo is literally a car built for two people. 8.8 feet long (two fit into one average-sized parking space) and five feet tall, it reaches speeds of up to 90 mph. This car is like a Vespa with a roof (unless you like the convertible).

Interested? This summer you can learn about the car and share your enthusiasm for it by attending the "street smart" Road Show. Seriously interested? For $99 you can make a refundable reservation making you among the first to be able to purchase the car next year.

There will be up to four models available ranging from a stripped down model, which will likely make you wish you had gone with a $3,500 Vespa, to the 5-speed automated manual transmission with manual or automatic mode "cabrio" convertible. Air conditioning, power windows, and alloy wheels will all be optional. Arriving to the mass market in spring of 2008, prices will begin around $12,000 but go up as high as $17,000.

Available in a range of fun colors, customized designs, and coupe-style (think old-school Cabriolet), Smartcars will be the "new black" for the auto world in 2008. These cars will change the way that urbanites live, travel, and find parking in cities as dense as Manhattan (the New York nudge will be a thing of the past).

Smartfortwo is a tight fit, so if you're tall, we suggest the "cabrio" for your comfort, but let us know what you think after a test-drive.

I remember seeing these announced as $22K a year ago.
this is much better.
Saw two crusing around Scottsdale this week.

EMN:

This is cool, and I'm totally down with going green, but 90 mph? Where can I go in CA at 90 mph? Perhaps I would use it to sit in LA traffic...
