Credit card spoon and fork
I don't know why I love this credit spoon and fork, but it probably has something to do with my need to to feel prepared for anything, coupled with my fascination with Origami. I bet the person who came up with this idea was caught one too many times with a container of pudding or ice cream with no utensil nearby to eat it with. Rather than suffering the indignity of lapping up food like a dog, you could just pull out a spoon from your wallet. However, the stated premise behind this product has to do with healthy eating and the idea that lack of highly portable personal utensils can lead you to eating stuff like candy bars rather than, say, salad or soup (though one could ask: where do they sell salad and soup without offering forks and spoons?).
I must have a few of these for my car and my purse, as my personal disaster planning involves the eating of lots of gelato but little time to remember to grab a real spoon.
Available for $9 at the Shop at the Cooper Hewitt.

(ok, I wrote out this big, long, enthusiastic comment but then your awful comment registration system took ages and then ate the comment I originally wrote. The only reason I'm bothering to type it all out again is to tell you exactly how crap the typekey registration is. Seriously, there are other ways of filtering out spam bots that aren't so intrusive to actual readers. Then I typed it out AGAIN, making sure I copied the whole thing to my clipboard this time, and then I got another error that I wasn't logged in, even though I was, and now I'm posting it for a third time. I cannot possibly be the only one frustrated by this, and more than a little turned off to ever comment on your blog again after this.)
This is perfect for my friend who's moving to Japan for the summer! I'm going to make her one of these out of some stiff plastic sheet I've got lying around, and make a little fabric envelope for it, too. I imagine most restaurants there are chopstick-only and sometimes you just need a fork or spoon!

I never realized that popgadget was using TypeKey until your comment, Melissa. I wonder if they're using SixApart's MoveableType as their blog engine?
While you're on the topic of "what popgadget can do better" :), can I add that I don't care for the slew of "blog aggregater" buttons after each entry? I understand popgadget wants to get noticed, but do we really need margins and borders around all these icons? Just have them there, borderless, and let users click on them if they're a Yahoo, digg, or del.icio.us user.
