Optimum body balance with the BalanceBall Chair
If you're one of those who spend an increasing amount of time at your desk, you know the importance of having a good chair. When designed with the right kind of ergonomics, a good chair can spare you the hassle and pain of back aches and fatigue. However, selecting an ideal chair is a difficult task given the myriad options available. Personally, I have always been overwhelmed by the numerous adjustments possible in these chairs and have never really been able to get that ideal setup.
The BalanceBall Chair, designed by Dr. Randy Weinzoff, looks like something that's easy to use and sit comfortably in too. The doc claims the chair is an effective tool for strengthening core muscles and improving spinal alignment. The core of the chair is basically an inflatable ball mounted on glidable casters with an adjustable support for the lower back. The air pressure in the ball can be adjusted by means of an air pump (supplied with the chair).
So, if you're interested in keeping that back healthy and don't mind the extra attention that this distinctive looking chair will fetch you, click yourself to the Gaiam store. The price tag is a cool $80.

Using balls as chairs are "so hot right now." The WSJ did a story about it a couple weeks ago, noting that balls are popping up in offices and classrooms everywhere. Some ergonomists are wary of the ball craze, stating that sitting on balls all day may actually be bad for your back. Personally, I am a complete ball chair convert, and have been sitting on a ball for at least 8 hours a day for over 2 years, and I love it!
