I love freedom, and I love the EFF
The Popgadget masthead says that we embrace technology, and we're also quite the fans of freedom. I was reading Boing Boing this evening, and Doctorow reminded me to make mention of some people I truly appreciate.
Twenty-seven years ago there was no defender of freedom in the digital realm as the legal groups that usually jumped in to protect American freedoms had no idea how to react when confronted with technology. That's a problem we still see today: whenever innovation changes the playing field the traditional players react with the old rules first, and fixes are hopefully affected later.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation was founded by some cool cats who recognized that computers and directories should be subject to the same Constitutional protections afforded to our homes and filing cabinets. The EFF has done quite a bit to help the technology minded, and we've all benefited from their legal pursuits to protect innovation, free speech, consumer rights, and privacy.
I've gone off on that diatribe to say that the EFF has a new packet of laptop and cell phone sized stickers for a $7 donation, and there's even some great packing tape that seals boxes as well as decries those all important Fourth Amendment rights. Consider becoming a member, or just go throw 'em a couple of bucks for some schwag and help defend all our freedoms.
