Valentine's Day Gift Guide
Romantic music is generally known for a slow waltz that builds to a crescendo, but the British Library is marketing a disc of sea creature mating calls. Sounds of the Deep features larger mammals like the seal, the walrus, and the humpback whale making their mating calls, but the curious star of the show is the lowly haddock fish. The haddock's underwater mating call starts out slow and ramps up to a steady hum while building in volume and intensity. (Sample at the BBC) I know that it sounds crazy, but it's a totally organic sound experience that's strangely romantic. (Johnny)
This <3 heart necklace, which sells for $75, is the newest addition to the smiley collection from the whimsical jewelry store, Sweet Tooth. If jewelry with IM symbols is not your thing, take a look at some of their other lovely -- totally non-geek -- collections. (Hoyun)
The Mustek Ality frame all by itself is pretty nice- it's an 8" or 15" digital frame that supports all popular memory card formats, but fill it up with a photo history of your relationship, all "your songs," and video clips from significant romantic events, and you've got a V-day grand-slam, guaranteed. The already minimalist design goes totally covert when it's turned off; the touch-screen LCD's reflective surface just looks like a mirror. The 8" model is $299 and comes with a wireless remote. Available from Mustek. (Mia)
Set the mood with the romantic or possibly just hunger-inducing aroma of chocolate with the cocoa and almond reed diffuser. Reed diffusers are much more aesthetically pleasing than a stick-on air freshener and you don't have to play with fire as you would with scented candles or oil-diffusers. Much subtler effect as well. $40 from Uncommon Goods. (Mia)
Nothing says I love you like...a gargantuan glass of wine? This seamless mouth-blown wine glass from Italy can hold an entire bottle of wine, which is what you want if a date is going badly, right? Hammacher Schlemmer suggests you can also use it to display olives, candies, or floating candles. Nah, drink your wine and tell everyone the next day you only had ONE glass. $24.95, and hand wash only (like you could fit this in your dishwasher). (Evan)
How about this caffeine necklace ($85) and matching caffeine earrings ($40) from fractalspin for your significant other or friend who's trying to cut back on coffee? If she's no longer drinking it, the molecule in silver might infuse her with the essence of the stimulant (or drive her stark raving mad). (Hoyun)
Anyone old enough to remember the pre-Game Boy era will surely appreciate a Nintendo Mini Classic game, now miniaturized to keychain gadget size, but otherwise completely identical to the original handheld games of the 80s. Available in Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong. Each is $8.99 from Think Geek. (Mia)
For the minimalist guy in your life who doesn't like carrying a big wallet, there's the circuit board money clip for $10 and cigarette case (which can be used to carry credit cards instead) for $25, also from fractalspin. (Hoyun)
Roses always make for a great Valentine's. And the bigger, the better. So go ahead and proclaim your love with the world's tallest roses. Measuring over 5ft in height, these exotic roses are grown nestled between two volcanoes in Ecuador. Luxury does come at a cost though with a dozen of these costing about 250 bucks. That does not seem to have deterred many since there is already a waiting list to get them on V-Day. Order them now at Organic Bouquet. (Kanchana)
Be a romantic and put your sentiments in words this year by personalizing your sweetie pie's Nano case ("You had me at hello," "Love you for eternity," "Get your hands off my Nano"). The flip case is made of high quality leather (I have the pink one) with a built-in screen protector, full access to all controls and ports, and a multi-use strap on the back attaches the case to backpack, purse strap, or belt loop. Before the big V-Day, personalization is free, after that check out the pricing. $19.95 at Pacific Design. And for a limited time, get $5 off at ProFlowers when you purchase a red or pink Nano case. Popgadget readers can take 15% off anything at Pacific Design -- just enter the promotional code : POP. Good until 2/28/07. (Evan)
If you are one of the "always late" types, being in love will mean a lot of strain on your partner. Now sweeten her pain of waiting with this cute heart shaped necklace. Everytime she checks the time, she will be reminded of your undying love for her and all will be forgiven. If you believe this theory can work for you, the necklace is a right choice for this Valentine's. Buy it at Fredflare for $20. (Kanchana)
Few tubs made for the home are big enough for two (including the one in this catalog photo) but this bath caddy would be great for your bath-loving beloved, especially if presented with champagne and chocolates. Non-breakable champagne flutes and glass dish with floating candles are included. $68 from Red Envelope. (Mia)

I remember seeing the reed diffuser for much less than 40 dollars at my local GNC. Not that particular brand, but a cheaper alternative.
