Apex USB battery charger

apex_usb_charger.jpg

Think of all those consumer electronics we power with disposable batteries. Now think about how all those batteries find themselves in the dumpster, headed for land fills. Rechargeable is definitely the way to go. With the Apex USB charger, four batteries can charge in four hours by plugging into your computer's USB port. The unit is small, just four inches square and one inch high, perfect for traveling. However, unlike the USB cell batteries, which have gotten a lot of attention lately, they do not have a USB port directly attached to the battery case. Not as cool perhaps, but probably more useful, since most laptops tend to have only one or two USB ports, and you get to choose whether to charge AA or AAA batteries in the pack. Not only that, it makes a great carrying case for your spare set of batteries; as you use one set, the other can be charging nicely or stowed and ready-to-go.

Improved breast cancer screening from Z-Tech

ztech_breastscan.jpg

It's a known fact that the key to curing breast cancer is early detection and prompt treatment. Hence, recent reports suggesting that screening for breast cancer is declining among women in the U.S. is worrying health officials. The reasons cited for this decline include insufficient access to mammography facilities and, surpisingly, apathy and indifference among women about the entire process. The second reason could be related to the fact that mammography screening methods have always suffered from higher costs, dangers from increased exposure to harmful radiation and confusion over the diagnostic accuracy.

Electronic chic

ZELLE_007_lg2.jpgZELLE_016_lg2.jpg

Ethernet cables and diodes aren't just for computer insides anymore. In the hands of Liz McLean Knight, they make great minimalist jewelry for her Zelle brand, providing that extra touch of geek cred even when you're sans tech toys.

A twist of ethernet cables creates a cheerful, colourful choker, while diodes and ferrite beads bring a modern, stylized edge to bracelet designs. I'm especially taken by the MIDI cuff, made of sequential MIDI cable segments (Knight also works on an online magazine about electronic music). It adds a cool Star Trek vibe without having to resort to pointed ears or passionately uttered Klingon. Great as streetwear or sciencewear!

Available from Elsewares for $15-45 per item.

Human-size Gundam figure

gundam.jpg

In a typical mall in Taipei, I saw this amazing model from the Gundam anime series in a store which sold anime inspired models, toys, DVDs and games. The store is on the 3rd floor of KMall, which is located across the street from the Taipei Main Station subway stop.

Show off your Mii

wii_girls.jpg

I've been too busy to buy a Wii, but my friends all have them, and Wii-mania is all over the place. I know that everyone has been making stylized representations of themselves to place in-game, and I think that's great. Not surprisingly, there are now a couple of options to move that cute little face into the real world. I bet that Nintendo is kicking themselves for not thinking of it first.

Mr. Cloud is offering bespoke printed t-shirts of either the full Mii body, or a glamour shot of the cute little face. It's all pretty simple; just add Mr. Cloud as a Wii friend (6977 3899 7312 2585) and send all the pertinent data from one game console to another. You'll pay £24.99 for the privilege, but at least no one else will have a copy of your Mii-shirt.

Allison Q. McCarthy and Mr. Thiel have teamed up to offer custom sculptures of Wii's, but they are not yet available. Fairly soon a few techno junkies will be able to purchase custom made statues modeled after their digital creations. Demand has been ridiculous since first announcing the plan, and to raise capital for production the team will be offering a few eBay auctions for the first batch of custom. Check their site on February 1st for the official auction announcement.

Dopod P800w links GPS and photos, all in a PDA

P800w.jpg

Have you ever walked by a restuarant or a cool store, only to forgot where it was, never to be found again? Recently in Taipei, I discovered the Dopod P800w, a GPS/ PDA, which has a feature that lets you take a picture with its 2 megapixel camera and then associates it to a location via GPS. That way, you can take a picture of something and then save its location. On the PDA side of things, it has a Quad Band GSM phone, built in Wifi and FM Radio, and Bluetooth.

I've seen this device for around $20,000NT or roughly $606US.

(Thanks, Henry)

Skype Phones from Futiro

futiro_phones.jpg

If you think that the three phones shown in the picture are bound to leave a hole in your pocket, think again. These sleek looking designer Skype phones cost only between $55 to $75, but have looks that can command much more. Designed by the Irish company Futiro, the three flavors are branded as Luna, Terra and Solo. The top of the line model, Luna, comes with a full keypad and hands-free feature while the cheapest of the three, the Terra, has a simple four-button keypad. Solo makes its presence felt in the middle of the range with its portability feature.

Alas, there is a reason why these phones are so inexpensive. They connect only via USB and so you've got to be corded to your PC while you're using them. As of now, there is no news of a WiFi version in the works, and I wouldn't expect the same to be available in this price range. If however, you care more about appearance than the fact that they're not wireless, you can buy these from the Futiro website.

Smart Shopper

smartshopper.jpg

Until there's a frig that can do the grocery shopping for you, the Smart Shopper may be the next best thing. It's a voice activated note taker...just press a button and say, for instance, "coffee," and that item will appear on the LCD. When you are ready to shop, simply press print and your list comes right out of the unit.

The SmartShopper comes pre-programmed with 2,500 items and then you just add your own unique items (for me, that would be Starbucks Java Chip Ice Cream). Since it uses thermal paper which doesnt require ink cartridges or replacement, and runs on batteries, it's easy to operate (one would assume). You can also add your errands to the list and it will print those out at the top.

Though not cheap at $149, it may still end up being the most used item in your kitchen.
For now it's available at their site, Neiman Marcus and JC Penney catalogs, and they are rolling it out to retail stores soon.

Hot Jugz: a portable shower

hotjugz.jpg

On any given day in Southern California, you'll find surfers with professional jobs who hit the waves at daybreak before heading off to their offices. Some of them even change into their work clothes in the parking lot. For these types, a Hot Jugz portable shower is a must. After all, what better way to clean up in the morning when a hot shower at home is not an option. A HotJugz portable shower uses no batteries or propane and does not require supports for hanging. With a two-gallon capacity, the HotJugz shower can run for up to sixteen minutes with only fifteen to twenty pumps. Insulation keeps hot or cold water on temperature, and the extendable shower wand allows for easy maneuvering. Even if you're not a surfer ,you'll find that the HotJugz can be a lifesaver when camping or engaging in other sports activities. For any of those times you might want a hot shower, but are not be able to take one in the usual way, this portable shower will make a great substitute.
