Avocado slicer
I love avocados, but have never gotten the hang of how to cut them up without losing most of it in a mushy mess between my fingers. I found this avocado slicer at Williams-Sonoma for $15. One end of this simple, stainless steel tool takes out the pit (something I've never been able to do cleanly with a regular knife), and the other slices evenly in one smooth move. And unlike most shiny kitchen gadgets I fall in love with at Williams-Sonoma, my tiny cottage kitchen can handle this little addition.

Avocado slicing is actually easy if you know a couple of "tricks." Here's how:
First, using a sharp knife cut the avocado in half by cutting all the way around through the skin and down to the pit. Twist the halves in opposite directions and they will separate. Then hold the half with the pit firmly in your hand and hit the pit firmly with the sharp edge of the knife. It will stick in the pit. Twist the knife and the pit will come loose. Then use a table knife and slice (or dice) inside the skin.
Then just peel the skin away from the now sliced (or diced) flesh. If you aren't going to eat it right away toss it in some lemon juice to prevent browning from oxidation.

I've gotten something similar (without the pit remover) from my local Safeway for less $$. Look in the Kitchen stuff area at your local grocery store.
Yes, the slicing system is nice though. And I actually can slice an avocado without making a mess. This is easier so I do enjoy using it.

Here's how you take out the pit:
- Cut the 'cado in half.
- Bring the knife blade down on the pit with enough force that it gets stuck in it a little.
- Hold the 'cado and use the knife blade to twist the pit out by rotating the knife perpendicular to the avocado.
Works every time, no stupid crap needed.

to cut into amd twist the pit out, you don't need a sharp knife. i use a regular old sandwich spreader. one swift chop into it, twist, and a sharp blow against the side of the sink to free the pit from your spreader and you're in business. just slice by scooping out of each half in small increments and throw away the peel. easy-peasy. i prefer lime and just a little salt with avocado, but that's me.

Wow, I had no idea people were so opinionated about avocado slicing. I see now that there's a method to this, but I still want the slicer.
