Toy Fair 2006: RoboNova-1

robonova.jpg

I got to see the RoboNova-1 in action at the Toy Fair and even though I'm usually not all that interested in robotics, I did stop and watch. For a long time. I even surprised myself. The build-it-yourself RoboNova has 16 digital servo motors that allow the robot to dance, do cartwheels, walk, etc. etc., but you really do have to see them perform as a group of about 10 robots, executing perfectly synchronized, complex moves choreographed to music. It was like watching a Will Smith video. The dance moves looked natural and amazingly human as the robots moved fluidly from one move to the next, managing to even look graceful at times. At $1000, the RoboNova isn't cheap, but hey, neither is a Will Smith video.
