Bake Gadgets: Orka Squid, Kyocera Perfect Peeler
After testing out an array of new kitchen gadgets, NYT baker-writer Julia Moskin gives the "white thumbs up" to two new gizmos: the Orka Squid and the Kyocera Perfect Peeler.
In A Baker Rolls with the Technology she writes:
But the final step, basting the pie with sugared orange juice, benefited from a pleasing new device, the Orka Squid. A combination pastry brush and baster, the heat-resistant Squid sucks liquid (hot or cold) into its body, then releases it through a small, soft brush with a gentle squeeze.
Moskin also likes the Perfect Peeler's ambidextrous design:
The blade on Kyocera's new Perfect Peeler flips around so it can be used in a pulling motion, as for peeling a pear, or a scraping one, as for a carrot. It also works for left-handed users, and the ceramic blade is smooth and sharp. Unlike most of the other redesigned gadgets, this one worked better than the old-fashioned kind.
The silicone Squid comes in blue, charcoal or red for $9.99 at isi. The Perfect Peeler will run you $19.95 at Sur La Table and elsewhere.
