Charlie Brown's Pathetic Tree

"Look, Charlie, let's face it. We all know that Christmas is a big commercial racket. It's run by a big eastern syndicate, you know." — Lucy Van Pelt
You've seen 1965's "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Charlie Brown is completely bummed about the overwhelming materialism that he sees during the Christmas season, so Lucy suggests that he become director of the school Christmas paegent. Charlie Brown accepts, but it's a struggle. He attempts to restore the spirit of family and generosity with a sad little Christmas tree.

When I saw this, I thought, "At last! A Christmas Tree for Jewish Me!" I grew up in suburban Connecticut, where my parents defined our Jewishness as either not-celebrating-Christmas or by the Christmas shows we were allowed to watch (one of which was "A Charlie Brown Christmas.")! I have such fond feelings for that show -- and for that pathetic tree, which Linus helped fix up with his blanky! I'm going to get one, and set it up right next to my menorah.

A bit of a creepy concept. Didn't the cartoon object to the big fancy glitzy commercialism of Christmas? And know I can picture thousand of these humble little trees lined up in warehouses, awaiting shrinkwrap.
Still, it is marvelously funny to see.
