MIKRO fold up sculptures
I have an obsession with pop-up books so I love everything about the MIKRO fold up series, particularly the MIKRO House. It's a flat piece of stainless steel that becomes dimensional when unfolded. Product designer Sam Buxton wanted to design himself a unique business card that would really show off his talents, so he employed a chemical milling process that laser cuts these complex and delicate shapes to design a card that replicated a 3D version of himself working at his computer. A manufacturer spotted them at the Design Museum in London and the business card was put into mass production. Other fold up sculptures followed.
I think the series is genius. It just looks like it's as much fun to unfold and watch them transform from flat to 3D, as it is to look at them
