Adopt a Holoholo

No time to dedicate to a pet? But dying to get a no-fuss companion? Get yourself a friendly Holoholo then.
Marketed in Japan as a "maintenance-free" pet, Holoholo is a water tank, decorated with a stick of vegetation and coloured sand at the bottom, starring tiny shrimp swimming around inside it. Holoholo are red and the larger ones can grow to over a centimeter in length. Over a centimeter! How exciting!
Holoholo (I love that name) survive by feeding off microscopic bacteria that are also living in the water and every now and again you have to squirt some special bacteria-water into their plastic tank for them to feed on.

holo holo in fact is a Hawaiian word meaning to go for a pleasant time, for a walk, ride, sail, stroll etc. Mostly just for the sake of having a good time.

Are these like the sea-monkeys of yore? A friend of mine has something like this and I've watched the poor things waste away over the years in their pretty glass hermetically sealed cage.

I've seen these at Sharper Image! I'd like one.. but they're rather pricey.

I used to sell these things at a mall-based, Discovery Channel-eqsue store in the late 1990s.

Actually, Brookstone has had a similar product forever -- it's called the EcoSphere (http://www.brookstone.com/shop/produchttp://www.brookstone.com/shop/product.asp?product_code=355735
It's also available in a cool pod shape. http://www.brookstone.com/shop/product.asp?product_code=355727
We bought my boss one for Xmas a couple of years ago, and though the shrimp have died, it's still going strong.
