One-time use video cameras
This week, CVS will start selling the Pure Digital one-time-use video camera for $29.95. I'm a little surprised at how almost decent it looks (albeit in an air conditioner remote control kind of way). I haven't seen the exact weight and capacity specs but it's obviously highly compact and thin. The flash memory records 20 minutes of video, probably at a resolution they will be calling "near-DVD" quality. Just like with the still camera version, you can't buy film (or in this case tapes), and instead you return the entire thing to CVS for processing for an additional $12.95. That's not so cheap, but you do get the footage on DVD which makes for easy transfers, or copying and editing. You can also upload the video to a video-sharing website for free, so you can inflict, I mean share, your cinematographic skills with everyone. It won't make you (okay, me) stop longing for a Sony DCR-PC55, but looks to be an easy and inexpensive alternative for infrequent movie-makers. And it could start a whole new art form.
