McDonald's gets tech-savvy

I guess (or better I hope) that after "Super-size Me", McDonald's is experiencing some difficulties in drawing customers, and so in an attempt to appeal to the young and tech-savvy the well known fast food chain has begun pilot testing a new ATM like machine called the Blaze Net. Blaze Net allows customers to buy music and ring tones, print photos and surf the Web at the restaurant. The new flagship restaurant opened last Monday near the Oakbrook Center Mall in suburban Chicago, and along with the typical McDonald's delicatessen, offers a whole variety of Starbucks-like coffee-variations.

In November, similar equipment had been introduced in a McDonald's in Munich and has proven to be quite successful since it's now being rolled out into many of the company's 1,250 German restaurants.

Retro Nintendo game watches

I don't know how it's possible but I never had one of these Nintendo game watches the first time around, sometime in the 80s, so I kind of want one now. Fredflare has the original watches, all in good working condition. They come in Legend of Zelda (pink), Donkey Kong (black) and the camouflage G.I. Joe. All are $60.

There's also the rock it iPod case, for that Sony walkman, circa 1985 look. $36 at fredflare.

Ice cream lock

I know it seems pretty stupid, but I know at least one person who could have used a Ben&Jerry's pint lock, a combination lock that keeps your ice cream from being opened by others. One of my friends used to have a roommate who was so paranoid about someone eating her food, particularly her ice cream, that she'd lick everything, in plain view of everyone, before putting it away. Unsanitary, yes, but probably very very effective as well.

Ice cream hoggers who don't want to pre-lick their pints can pick up the lock for $5.50 at Ben&Jerry's.

Trophy deer lamp

If you'd love to have a gigantic deer's head mounted on your wall, but the brutal killing part of attaining such a trophy has put you off, you now have an alternative: Trophy, a magnificent buck made of resin and lit up with fluorescent tubes. Trophy is hand-molded by designer Isabelle Rolland and is a very limited edition, and thus very expensive, $3299 at Generate.

I can see this starting a whole new trend: urban ironic hunter chic.

I suggest starting with a rifle hangar. No need for real firearms, that's going a bit too far, just hang your iPod on your hunter pack instead.

Crazy Frog Axel F at the number one spot

Crazy Frog Ring tones have become quite popular here in Europe and according to this latest news, I guess that the funny-looking, but annoying frog is going to ring around for a while longer.

A song based on an annoying mobile phone ring tone has hopped to the number one spot on Britain's single charts.

The "Crazy Frog Axel F" ring tone, inspired by the 1980's movie theme from 'Beverly Hills Cop', is the first song that was created specifically for mobile phones to crossover onto the mainstream pop music charts.

Saying that the ring tone has just been inspired by the 80's Axel F song is an understatement and I wonder if we can really speak of a new trend here. But what is actually really interesting is that the super-annoying Crazy Frog song has replaced Oasis as new number one and has beaten the new single of Coldplay.

In any case, I guess this is going to become a summer hit here in Europe and I am expecting to see a crazy frog dance choreographed to go along with it.

Curious to see what this is all about?

Pokemon Nintendo DS

That's it, now nothing can stop me from getting a DS, pink and with one of my favorite pokemons (Mew) on it?!?!?!
But geography and time might delay my impulse purchase, at least for the moment; this new DS version will be available only in July for 15,000 Yen and unfortunately it will be available only at the Pokemon Centers in Japan. There are no plans to bring it over to Europe or the US yet. Maybe it can be purchased on the Pokemon Center website.

High security cloth bag

Boffins at the John Hopkins University have developed a cloth bag made from an electronic fabric that not only resists tampering, but also sounds an alarm or sends an alert to the owner and authorities.

The cloth can be designed to support a variety of electronic components and can be sewn into many shapes. Once fashioned into the appropriate device, the cloth can be programmed to respond differently to a variety of situations. The owner of a bag that secures a laptop computer, for example, might wirelessly link it to an alarm system, which can sound if the bag is moved or tampered with. It could also trigger a video camera to record the intrusion or place a call to the owner's phone to alert them of the breach.

Batteryless and wireless mouse

The A4Tech battery-free wireless optical mouse is powered by nothing else than RFID.

It is in fact powered by the NB-50 mouse pad which has a cord and connects to the computer via USB. So the mouse is cordless, the pad is not. To get energy, the mouse can be about two inches off the pad and you can put various objects between the two without causing significant interference.
