Ear vacuum cleaner

The Ear Vacuum Cleaner is today's how-can-we-live without-it Japanese gadget. It is suitable for all ages, compact and runs on batteries. Its strong suction keeps your ear canals clear of wax and other debris.
Comes with a cleaning brush and two nozzles.

Cute scary dolls

...or maybe just plain scary. I guess it all depends on how you feel about dolls, sometimes they can be creepy, and these definitely have all the cards to belong in that category. They would make good extras in a horror movie.

They are without key facial features which may render them monstrous yet they are creatures of beauty. They look the way they do because they inhabit the place in between life and death.

The description might not be very comforting, but I still find these rather unusual looking dolls quite cool. There is a whole story behind them that can be checked out on litteappledolls.

Some of the dolls are available for 22.99 at forbiddenplanet.com.

Woodoo Display

I don't know what to think of this, cool...no wait...weird...probably just too much to have to look at every day...and then again, kind of not really kitchen material, but then again, still sort of cool. In any case the Woodoo Display was designed by Raffaele Iannello for Viceversa along with a rather funny toilet brush.

5 in 1

I have to say, I am quite intrigued by Octave's Multipod 5 in 1 USB flash drive. This 128 MB storage device will also take pictures, shoot short videos with sound, and record voice. It also functions as a web cam, so you can share every minute of your life worth sharing with whomever you want. The Multipod is very small, extremely small as a matter of fact (see picture above) and is available for $149.00.

All in all, the Multipod seems a pretty neat gadget to have, though I keep wondering what the manufacturer was trying to achieve by putting "pod" as part of the product's name. I don't know, maybe hoping to exploit Apple's iPod popularity?...just a guess.

Tea Time

During the past few years I have developed an increased taste for and interest in tea. My house is full of different kinds of teas: black tea, green tea, white tea, roibos tea and various herbal teas. I have a couple of books and websites I check to find out about the properties of all the different teas and about how they are supposed to be prepared. So, when I read about the Twinings Design Competition, I spent a good deal of time online looking for information about it. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a lot, but here is what I could gather.

I was able to find just one picture of the winning project, Erica, designed by Dino Favero, but wasn't able to make much out of it. In any case, Erica is a sphere that includes all the accessories needed to make tea, organized in a spiral: a water boiler, a tea measuring spoon, a tea box, cups and plates.

The other really interesting and original project, that didn't win a prize but deserved special mention, is Tamara Ferioli's "Attimi di te". The project consists of a mattress, a pillow and a blanket all made out of treated used tea bags. Unfortunately I couldn't find any pictures online, but I can assure you that it looks really good. The only picture I saw of it was in Il Venerd/ di Repubblica (18.02.2005).

There were many other interesting projects like the Roll-Tea, or the two tea spoons inspired products: "Il cucchiaino" and "Mio time" (see picture at the beginning).

Cool wine bottle bag

When I first saw this product I thought about my wine loving cousins back in NY. I am sure they would love it...and I am quite sure they probably already know about it. I am talking about Built NY's Byobag.

The Byobag has been designed especially to carry wine bottles; it's good looking, comfortable and protects and insulates the bottles. The bag is made from neoprene and its clever design allows you to serve the wine directly from the bag, by just pulling down the sides. It comes as a one bottle Byobag, available for $14.99, or as a two bottle Byobag for $16.99.

A byo lunchbag is also available for $19.99 and it's rather cool looking.

All the byo-line products are available at Built NY's site and come in several colors.

Wired headsets dangerous - thanks Bluetooth!

My car is one of the few places I feel like I can get quiet time so I generally try not to talk on the phone while driving. In the past when I needed to talk in the car I used a headset or earbud but became frustrated with every headset, earbud, and earpiece I tried.

After several scares in which the wire from my headset got tangled around my gear shift or around my jacket or arm as I turned a corner, I gave up on earbuds and headsets all together. Until recently I'd just been using the internal speakerphone in my Nokia if I really had to use the phone while driving.

My conclusion- Cell phone headsets are just plain dangerous and I didn't need the University of Chicago Hands-Free Cellphone Study to tell me.

Well recently my opinion has changed. Although I work and teach in the field of design and technology, anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm pretty much a neo-ludite when it comes to gadgets. So when I was given a Plantronics M2500 wireless headset as a gift recently (thanks you know who!) no one was more surprised than I was at how excited I've been over this gadget.

It's still a bit too early to tell and I can't yet comment on the the battery and charging ability, but my initial response is EUREKA!. The Plantronics m2500 wireless headset is comfortable, fairly easy to set up and use, is moderately stylish, and actually works, which is more than I can say for another model. Unlike with earbuds and headsets, I haven't gotten a headache yet from using this thing and the sound quality is clear, and I can typically continue my conversation in my home as far as 20 feet from the phone.

With a street price of around $40 at places like Buy.com, decent design and styling, comfortable fit and no wires to inhibit your driving, it's definitely worth the investment.

New iPod Mini

Apple introduced the new iPod Mini yesterday and here are the specs:

? More vivid colors (but the gold version has been nixed).
? The control icons are colored to match now.
? Storage bumped up to 6 GB.
? Improved battery life, up to 18 hours.

The old 4 GB model is still available with a $50 reduction in price, down to $199, and the new 6 GB model takes over the $249 price point.

Also announced: A $349 30 GB "budget" model of the iPod Photo with the color screen.

Nose, tongue, eye controlled mouse

A group of computer science students at Hansei University in Korea has developed a software program that lets people with disabilities control a computer mouse with nose, eye, and tongue movements. A web camera carefully tracks the movements of the nose or tongue and then eye blinks function as single or double mouse clicks. The most exciting aspect of this project is that any cheap web cam will work, so the expense is low and the university hopes to distribute the program for free in Korea.

This is similar to the nouse, nose-controlled mouse, with the added ability to track tongue movements for those with limited upper-facial mobility.

From Chosun Ilbo. I'm also trying to find the video on Arirang for pictures and details.
