What Do Women Game Designers Want?
Less than 10% of people working in the game industry are women and most of them are in customer service or marketing, not in production and programming. Avid gamers are the ones who go into game design, but since games are usually designed for men, it's no wonder that there's so little balance. Women in the gaming industry are trying to change that, and they addressed it at the first Women's Game Conference in Austin, Texas last month.
Dr. Swedyk is developing a course now that will focus on designing games that are appealing to women.
"Do women not play games because the games that are out there are designed for men, or is it just that women really don't like computer games?" said Elizabeth Sweedyk, an assistant professor of computer science at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif. "My guess is they don't like the games that are out there."
