Google Desktop Beta Released
Google's Desktop Search, in its first beta release, is available now. Desktop adds the ability to search through emails, web history, AOL IM chats, and Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. After the install, it integrates into your regular Google web searches so "Desktop" appears as an option. After the install, there's a lengthy one-time indexing which could take hours because Desktop waits for your computer's idle times. I've been stuck on "427 items indexed so far" for the last half hour. There's an option during install to disable "error reporting" which should add some small measure of privacy.
