Instant Messaging: Not Just for Kids
Did you think Instant Messenger was just a teen thing? omg, ur so dum! A new study by Pew Internet found that four out of ten Internet using adults were users of an IM application and one in five were using IM at work. A similar study released last week by AOL found that 59% of all Internet users were using IM. The AOL study showed that 90% of teens were using IM, but 71% of 22-34 year olds and 48% of those 55 and up were as well. Many surveyed users were using IM more often than they used email.
I know lots of responsible working adults have been resisting, but I say just give in. Learn the IM rules of the game and the chat lingo. Oh but I'd avoid this new $.33 a minute AIM Web Meeting service since it sounds just like the chat rooms that you can set up for $.00 a minute.
These studies didn't seem to list a breakdown of the different chat clients but you don't have to use just one. Meca and Trilian are popular free downloads that support many of the major IM services like AOL, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ.
