Escape to theOffice
Finally, someone has come up with the ideal solution for those of us who suffer from writer's block when we're sitting at our own desks. Aleks Horvat (founder of The Hollywood Creative Directory) came up with the idea for theOffice, a space for writers to come and rent a comfortable work station by the hour and drink as much coffee as they like. When I heard about this place, located in Santa Monica, I thought of all the people I know who work from home offices. Working where you live has its drawbacks -- the surrounding mess of family life, the isolation from human commerce, those moments when you realize that working in your pajamas has gone from refreshing to a little bit creepy. At theOffice, for $6 an hour, you can shake off the home office blues and be civilized again. Spread yourself out at a real desk and access the internet on your laptop, surrounded by others trying to escape creative impediments at home and without feeling like you've overstayed your welcome. Unfortunately, there are no immediate plans for bringing this to the East Coast.
